Unnkrishnan started learning Chenda at the age of 12 under Sri.Panjal Vakkiyil Sivasankaran Nair. In 1983 he joined Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam to laern Edakka and Chanda(Kathakali)  under Sri.Kunjunni Asan. After completing a 4 year diploma and 2 year Post diploma there he took special training in Tayambaka under Sri. Kalamandalam Balaraman.

 From 1990 onwards he has been performing with theAmmannur Gurukulam and Natanakairali as an Edakka artiste. He has also participated at several Dance and Theatre festivals in India such as Khajuraho, Bharath Rang Mahotsav etc. He has performed for SPIC MACAY at several venues in India with Kutiyattam actors.He has toured abroad widely with several of the prominent Kutiyattam and Kathakali artistes. 

He has worked in all the new productions of G.Venu such as Sakuntalam, Vikramorvasheeyam and Ammannur Kuttan Chkayar’s Mayashiras etc. 

Presently he is working as an Edakka artiste at the Ammannur Chachu Chkayar Smaraka Gurukulam.
